Professional Graphic Designer & Art Director Puerto Rico

From Ink to Pixel: A Life Through the Evolution of Design

For over four decades, design has been more than my profession-it has been my way of understanding the world. My creative journey began in Puerto Rico, in the era of analogue design: the scent of ink, the tactile rhythm of the drawing board, the Letraset sheets, and the patient precision of manual layout. Each composition was a dialogue between craft and discipline.

Then came the digital revolution, and with it, the transformation of everything we knew. I witnessed how technology reshaped creativity-from mechanical reproduction to digital expression, from local visibility to the boundless reach of the Internet.
Many colleagues struggled to adapt, and some fell behind in the face of rapid change. That taught me a timeless truth: no matter how much experience you have, if you stop learning, experimenting, or connecting with new generations, the market-and history itself-will move on without you.

Adaptation became my philosophy.
I learned to embrace new technologies without losing the human essence of design. Each evolution-from print to screen, from static to interactive, from physical to virtual-was an invitation to reinvent myself.

Over time, I also witnessed another remarkable transformation: the diversification of the many branches that now make up graphic design. Technology not only changed how we work but also expanded the field itself, giving rise to new specialities such as digital design, UX/UI, motion graphics, environmental design, and visual communication for emerging platforms.

In that context, I believe every designer must discover their own essence-their true area of passion-while continuing to learn from other disciplines. Knowledge makes us versatile, but passion gives us purpose and identity.

As an illustrator, I’ve also witnessed the rise of new digital media: from tablets and vector drawing to 3D art and generative design. The emergence of artificial intelligence brings both extraordinary opportunities and profound challenges, pushing us to redefine creativity, authorship, and the very concept of originality. I believe the true intelligence of design does not reside in the tool, but in the human ability to guide it with ethics, imagination, and intention.

Today, design exists within a global conversation where borders have dissolved. The Internet has given visibility to voices once ignored, though challenges persist, especially in regions like Puerto Rico, where our profession continues to seek greater recognition and unity. This vision has led me to reflect on the importance of building alliances that help organise and strengthen the professional design community in Puerto Rico: a long-term commitment to elevate and consolidate our field both locally and internationally.

As a designer and illustrator, my purpose is to keep design human, ethical, relevant, and deeply connected to the stories it communicates. From ink to pixel, and now to algorithms, each era brings its tools, but what truly endures is our ability to adapt, learn, and create meaning through change.

Contextual Note: Graphic Design in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is home to a vibrant, diverse, and ever-evolving graphic design community, shaped by a rich cultural heritage and a visual history that blends Caribbean, Latin American, and U.S. influences. Despite the talent and creativity that define its professionals, the field of design on the island has faced structural challenges, from limited institutional recognition to a lack of professional organisation and international visibility.

In recent decades, Puerto Rican designers have launched initiatives to strengthen the profession, build collaborative networks, and position design as a tool for social, cultural, and economic transformation. Still, there remains a pressing need to consolidate spaces for representation, promote specialised education, and establish ethical and professional standards that elevate the field both locally and globally.

Within this context, design in Puerto Rico reflects not only identity and resilience but also a fertile ground for innovation, inclusion, and interdisciplinary dialogue. Building alliances, documenting history, and actively participating in international platforms are key steps toward ensuring that Puerto Rican design claims its rightful place in the global conversation
